Wow, this wine is incredible. When tasting so many wines it is rare that one can give you goosebumps. At first you are met with a smokey, powerful and dense wine that takes a few minutes to unwind. As it opens in the glass you are met with a melange of tarte tatin, spice, vanilla, caramelised grapefruit and barley sugar. That is before a sip is taken. The intensity continues but the balance is the remarkable factor here. It is sweet but it is so clean, fresh and pure that it is almost weightless. Marmalade matches with pineapple, burnt sugar with grapefruit, before a mineral finish. Every piece is in harmony and will be even more astonishing when it is at maturity in 10 years.
The blend consists of 95% Tempranillo from 40-year-old vines in Las Cuevas, El Palo and Las Monjas in Rodezno, complemented with 5% Graciano from the Montecillo estate in Fuenmayor. The Graciano gives the wine an aromatic intensity and acidity, to carry the structure and elegance of the Tempranillo.
