Scores

"Aromas of cherries, red plums, wild herbs, stones and baking spices. Medium-bodied with sleek tannins. Round, with juicy, fruity character and a flavorful finish. Drink now."
91 points, James Suckling

"Bright violet. Spice-accented cherry, black raspberry, vanilla and mocha aromas show fine clarity and pick up a hint of smokiness as the wine opens up. Sweet and expansive on the palate, offering sappy red and dark berry, floral pastille and cola flavors sharpened by a peppery nuance. Shows very good energy and spicy thrust on the persistent finish, which is given shape by smooth, even tannins."
91 points, Josh Raynolds, Vinous

Tasting Notes

Ruby colour, clean and bright, medium-high robe with red cherry tones on the rim of the glass. Very expressive and intense on the nose with violet flowers, red fruits, wild strawberries, mulberries and redcurrants, wrapped around a rich palette of balsamic and spicy notes: vanilla, toffee, nutmeg, caramel and liquorice. It stands out on the palate for its balanced freshness and structure, with supple tannins and a smooth, rounded, classic Rioja Alavesa finish. Pairs well with Iberico pork appetizers, charcuterie, hard cheese and a variety of snacks, hearty main dishes and meats in general.

ProducerTorre de Oña

In 1995, a century after five winemaking families combined to form the winery society of La Rioja Alta S.A., the company expanded into Rioja Alavesa, founding the Torre de Oña estate. Here, with old bush-trained Tempranillo, they produce a more modern style of Rioja where the terroir lends itself to a fuller, riper style of wine that is complemented by the use of French oak and shorter maturation. The Estate is an innovative ‘chateau’ concept, established long before the rise of single-vineyard Rioja, producing site-specific wine in contrast to the traditional blends of La Rioja Alta. Originally under the control of technical director Julio Saenz, today the winemaking is led by Alejandro Lopéz, named as one of the Top 10 next-generation Spanish winemakers by Pedro Ballasteros MW in Decanter magazine.
