Tasting Notes

"The 2023 Grüner Veltliner Der Ott is a statement about the best sites, Spiegel, Stein, Rosenberg and Kirchthal, from younger vines up to 35 years old. It was hand-harvested, basket-pressed and made in large, neutral barrels, where it stayed on gross lees until May the following year. Subtlety on the nose has moss, lichen, lemon salt and wet soil, with a highlight of yeastiness. The palate takes all this subtlety, imbues it with tender, ripe, juicy fruit as a backdrop, and adds that salty, yeasty texture. The 2023 comes together in a creamy, smooth, slender synthesis of exquisite length and a super fresh finish. (Bone-dry)"

"
A little reserved on the nose compared to Am Berg and Fass 4 2024 bottlings at this stage. Racy level of acidity promised on the nose and then so opulent on the palate! Quite evolved and peppery with really ripe fruit. It's a bit of a mystery why it's not more forthcoming aromatically. But it's capable of providing huge pleasure already. Very pure Grüner Veltliner flavours."

ProducerWeingut Bernhard Ott

Weingut Bernhard Ott is one of Austria’s most innovative producers of Grüner Veltliner. The Ott estate, founded in 1889 and still family-run, farms 50 hectares of certified biodynamic vineyards. Bernhard Ott’s approach is firmly rooted in low-intervention winemaking: whole-cluster maceration, 100% stem inclusion, and spontaneous fermentations in a mix of Stockinger fuders. Ott was also a founding member of respekt-BIODYN in 2007, alongside Johannes Hirsch and Fred Loimer - a group now synonymous with the advancement of biodynamic viticulture in Austria. The winery is based in Feuersbrunn, in the south-western Wagram, with vineyard holdings just north of the village as well as a small but significant parcel in the Stein vineyard across the Kamptal border.
