Tasting Notes

"Hand-harvested. Whole-cluster pressed, with only the cuvée juice retained for fermentation in old barrels with ambient yeasts on light grape solids. Lees-stirring for added texture. Aromas of lanolin, toasted nuts, honey and candied lemon peel. Bright candied-lemon and crushed-nut flavours mix with salty grapefruit and dried herbs. Zippy, lean and delicious, with wonderful citrus notes and excellent acidity."

17 Points, AY, Jancis Robinson

"Dried apple slices and apple pie with some waxy undertones and medium body. It seems a little advanced in the very flavorful finish with just a hint of pie crust. Vegan. Drink now. Screw cap."

91 Points, James Suckling

"The 2023 Taihoa Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc is ultra green on the nose, leading with parsley and cilantro, green apple and kiwi fruit, sweet pea and honeydew melon. In the mouth, the wine is round, intense, creamy in texture and plump in feel. This is a distinct wine, and it has clear personality; however, I do prefer some of the other Astrolabe cuvées with more pace and crunch. This is very different to my memory of the last vintage that I tasted. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap."

92 Points, Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate

ProducerAstrolabe

Named after a 19th-century explorer's ship, family-owned Astrolabe is Simon and Jane Waghorn's voyage into winemaking exploration in New Zealand's Marlborough region. The estate is rightly celebrated for wines that express the variety of their soil and the nuances of their terroir: from the Wairau and Awatere Valleys to the unique conditions of the Kekerengu Coast. Astrolabe wines reflect the Waghorns' innovative treatment of specific parcels and winemaking process to capture undiscovered qualities of individual grape varieties, resulting in some of the most pure and elegant wines from the region.
