Tasting Notes

A superb introduction to the wines of Bernhard Ott, named after a special barrel (fass) that was hand selected every year by a customer for its quality. Grapes harvested around Spiegel and Rosenberg in lower Wagram produce an intensely aromatic wine revealing aromas of citrus, nectarine and basil. The overall experience is long, saline and moreish.

"The 2024 Grüner Veltliner Fass 4 is a brand that has existed since 1988 and is partly what made Bernhard Ott's name. It is harvested in the Hengstberg site, which straddles the regions of Kamptal and Wagram. Subtle yeast shows the verve of reduction, but also a salty, herbal tang typical of Grüner Veltliner. The palate continues with that herbal edge, bringing crushed yarrow and something slightly more peppery that smooths into the yeasty yet slender texture. Tender saltiness makes for a long finish on this slender, smooth wine."

"Not crystal clear but an inviting greenish straw. Just a little broader and softer than the Am Berg bottling and it will probably last a bit longer and develop more complexity. There's a light honeyed note before lots of tense green vegetation. No harm in cellaring this."

Weingut Bernhard Ott is one of Austria’s most innovative producers of Grüner Veltliner. The Ott estate, founded in 1889 and still family-run, farms 50 hectares of certified biodynamic vineyards. Bernhard Ott’s approach is firmly rooted in low-intervention winemaking: whole-cluster maceration, 100% stem inclusion, and spontaneous fermentations in a mix of Stockinger fuders. Ott was also a founding member of respekt-BIODYN in 2007, alongside Johannes Hirsch and Fred Loimer—a group now synonymous with the advancement of biodynamic viticulture in Austria. The winery is based in Feuersbrunn, in the south-western Wagram, with vineyard holdings just north of the village as well as a small but significant parcel in the Stein vineyard across the Kamptal border.
