CHÂTEAU CALON SEGUR

Château Calon Segur from the Saint-Estèphe appellation in Bordeaux is one of the fourteen classified third growths in the famous Bordeaux classification of 1855. It is one of the original three vineyards in Saint-Estèphe and is a historic estate once housing the famous Château Montrose in 1825. It is also the northern most classified growth in the Médoc.

Former owner Nicolas-Alexandre, marquis de Ségur who also controlled Château Latour and Château Lafite at the time, once claimed that his “heart was with Calon” leading to the modern day label to contain a heart shaped around the name of the...

A textbook Médoc cru classé, the 1996 is a gorgeous wine, dark and driven by its cassis fruit but with the reserve and austerity that marks this most northerly corner. The wine is beginning to blossom (and we would thus recommend a long decant before serving) but only the most impatient need to hurry to find the corkscrew.
