Puglia is “the heel” of the boot of peninsular Italy. It is bordered by both the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, giving it one of the longest coastlines of any region in Italy. The flagship red grape of Puglia is Primitivo, a distant cousin of California’s Zinfandel grape. The Puglia wines made with Primitivo are luscious, heavy and definitely “food wines”. PUGLIA WINE REGION
Explore our broad selection of wines from Puglia. For a flowery and fruity wine with delicate and light flavours, try the Rosato from Cantele – makes for a delightful partner to cheese soufflé and vegetable tarts. For a wine that is truly unique, Masseria Li Veli’s Aleatico Passito is like no other. Intensely amber in colour, there is an initial aroma of dried fruits. Going deeper will reveal undertones of liquorice and coffee. This is the perfect complement to dry sweets such as cakes or biscuits. Browse our range of wines from Puglia today.
PRODUCERS OF THE PUGLIA WINE REGION
Armit Wines imports two producers from the Puglia wine region: Cantele and Masseria Li Veli. The focus of the Cantele producers is local grapes including Primitivo, Negroamaro, Fiano and Bombino. Their commitment to modern technique helps to enhance their quality: including isolating yeast strains in Negroamaro grapes. Masseria Li Veli produces wines from a variety of different grapes, often using lesser known grapes. This is particularly evident by their Askos line, produced with the intention of reviving grapes close to extinction – in this case the Apulian grape.
