AUSTRIA

Austrian wine represents less than 1% of the total world wine production. Given that 75% of this is consumed on the domestic market, only a tiny amount will ever be available to export markets (0.25% of the total worldwide wine production). Up until the late 1980s, Austrian wine was considered to be sweet quaffing wine for tourists. After the wine scandal of 1985, the industry had extremely strict regulations imposed. Today, wines from Austria are incredibly pure and of the highest quality. Grüner Veltliner continues to be the wine du jour on any reputable restaurant list.

WINES FROM AUSTRIA

Austria is famed for its dry white wines, especially those made from the Grüner Veltliner grape. In fact, Grüner Veltliner accounts for about one third of all grapes grown across Austria. Grüner Veltliner is used to make a range of different wine qualities, from light wines with acidic tones to spicy, almost peppery wines with hints of fruit.

AUSTRIAN WINE REGIONS

Armit Wines imports wine from the Kamptal region, an area of about 4000 hectares. Kamptal has a varied terroir, ideal for the production of its famous Grüner Veltliner and Riesling grapes. Kamptal lies in the north of Austria. The steep sandstone slopes leave only a thin layer of soil, Riesling thrives in such conditions. Towards the Danube, the valleys expand, and in this area more red grapes are grown.
