PIETRADOLCE

Established in the Sicilian town of Castiglione di Sicilia on the Northern slopes of Etna, Pietradolce has become one of the finest wine producers from Sicily in a very short time. Their flagship , an Etna Rosso wine called Vigna Barbagalli, has already received 100 points from James Suckling. There are 11 hectares of vineyards at the Pietradolce winery, between 600-900 feet above sea, with three plots spanning two different territories (Rampante and Zottorinoto).

TASTING NOTES

This Archineri Etna Rosso is a wine of absolutely stunning precision and character. It is very reflective of its volcanic territory; with a fine, smoky intensity. Bright redcurrant, dried rose-petal and crab-apple notes accompany subtle earthy and herbal scents. This savoury complexity is supported by fine, chewy tannins and textbook cherry juiciness. This is a serious wine which demands food...

TASTING NOTES

A unique wine from pre-phylloxera, 100 year old Nerello Mascalese, whose yields are minute and produce less than half a bottle of wine per vine. The result is an extraordinary achievement. Powerful, concentrated morello cherry combines with violet, raspberry coulis and impressive herbal and spicy scents. There are full, mouthcoating tannins and incredible, wild florals alongside a crunchy acidity. The...

This stunning Nerello Mascalese is alive with energy, embodying orange peel freshness and bright ripe cherry and cranberry fruit. Beautifully nuanced with a richly velveteen texture, the delicate undercurrent of tarry minerals and wild herbal ungrowth provide a fascinating appeal that leads through to the final flourishes on its long finish. A triumphant wine. Armit Wines

TASTING NOTES

Just 5000 bottles were produced of this wonderful new Cru. The 90 year old vines are located at 900m above sea level on the volcano’s steep northern slopes, weathered by gusty sea winds and drenched in sunlight. The wine is a marvellous contrast to Pietradolce’s fine red Crus, as they aim to extract the character of Etna’s contrada. The wine...

From vines planted over a century ago on sandy loam soils at over 850m on Etna’s vertiginous slopes, this is a remarkable expression of the indigenous Carricante grape. Detailed notes of white peach, lemon, lime and soft sage create a full and distinct aroma which leads to an elegant, intense mouthfeel; stony, chalky minerals fill the palate which has a...

PIETRADOLCE WINES

Established in 2005, the Pietradolce winery is divided into 3 sections, where their main grapes are cultivated. Two of their sections are in the territory of Rampante, while the third lies in Zottorinoto.

The soil at Pietradolce is characterised by stony, light, sandy loam and mineral deposits that are in abundance thanks to the local volcano. The Pietradolce winery credits the volcano for giving their wines the special characteristics that make them so unique.

With a desire to stay true to their terroir, Pietradolce only cultivates grape varieties that are native to Mount Etna. They cultivate 3 main grape varieties. Nerello Mascalese is a late harvesting grape creating light coloured wines that display a red fruit character and gentle tannins - allowing the wines to be approachable at a young age, but also suitable for ageing. Nerello Cappuccio typically has a black fruit character that tends to be softer and less precise than its Mascalese counterpart. There are those who say Cappuccio is to Mascalese, what Merlot is to Cabernet. Finally, the winery also grows Carricante, a white grape variety that makes up the excellent Etna Bianco and is occasionally used to soften red varieties like Nerello Mascalese. Etna Rosse, Etna Bianco and Etna Rosato make up this winery’s core collection.

The wines of Etna are Pietradolce’s passion and it is a combination of respect for their tradition and modern viticulture techniques that enable them to make truly spectacular wines that express the unique terroir of Mount Etna.
