GERMANY

The unique climatic and geological framework of Germany is marked out by 13 different wine regions. Still best known for producing some of the finest Rieslings in the world from the steep slate slopes around the banks of the Mosel and Rhine rivers, Germany also produces some very interesting reds, as well as some of the finest sweet wines in the world.

TASTING NOTES

The 2013 Riesling Spatlese Niederhauser Hermannshohle is clear, pure and mineral on the nose, displaying lemon juice and crushed slate rocks, really refreshing. Sweet, rich and piquant on the palate, this is a vibrant and salty wine full of intensity, finesse and purity, quite young and firmly structured, very expressive and long. So salty! TASTING NOTES

The Rudolf Trossen Silbermond Riesling is a pale yellow green colour. The nose is elegant and restrained showing notes of lime, lime peel, white stone fruit, green tomato, pineapple and a touch of Riesling's characteristic petroleum note. The palate is equally restrained and all the better for it. Subtle flavours of lime flesh, tropical pineapple and grapefruit fill the reveal...

TASTING NOTES

The Madonna vineyard is a parcel of pre-phylloxera vines, which combined with the Trossen's low impact winemaking ensures a wonderfully pure expression of Riesling. Fine and concentrated this Riesling is brimming with ripe citrus, a touch of tropical fruit and a clearly defined slatey minerality. German Wine

Wines From Germany

Germany is rightly famous for its high-acidity, fruit-inflected white wines, like the 2011 Riesling Halbtrocken Muschelkalk from Theodorus in Pfalz. German wine has international prestige, with the Mosel valley wines like the 2014 Riesling Kinheimer Hubertuslay Spatlese from Weingut Rudolf Trossen. The unique German soils and climate mean there’s a huge variety of German wine types, and Armit Wines is proud to be the exclusive UK importer of many German wines.

German Wine Regions

Germany’s Pfalz region, near the Haardt mountains, is responsible for some of the country’s most characterful and unusual wines, including the 2011 Riesling Halbtrocken Muschelkalk, a fruity, aromatic German Riesling wine from the Theodorus vineyard. Meanwhile the Nahe region’s volcanic soils mean many different grapes are grown side by side. It’s the source of the classic late-harvest German white wine Niederhauser Hermannshöhle Spätlese from Herman Donnhoff, with its full, rich fruity nose and exuberant elegance on the palate. Perhaps less celebrated than other European wine-producing countries, Germany is none the less rewarding to the dedicated explorer.

Producers Of German Wine

Investigate the wines of Herman Donnhoff for yourself, with roots in the Nahe valley that run 300 years deep. Now growing a mix of Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Reisling German grape varieties on an operation that’s expanded to cope with the demand for their delicately balanced, traditional German wines.
