The noble sweet wines of Hungary from the Tokaji-Hegyalja region are renowned throughout the world and were being produced some 200 years before Sauternes. Of the 6 indigenous varieties officially approved for the production of Tokaji wine, 60% of all plantings are furmint vines. The grapes are left out on the vines to allow noble rot infection, then a variety of different styles of sweet wines are produced using these shrivelled grapes.
