Soft contours, silky tannins and sweet, perfumed fruit are some of the signatures in the 2014 Costa Russi. As always, Costa Russi is the most polished and open-knit of these wines in its youth. Succulent fruit, hard candy and lifted, perfumed aromatics give the 2014 considerable early appeal, but I expect time in bottle will work its usual magic. Today, the 2014 is showing only the barest hint of its potential. Even in the early going, though, the Costa Russi is a totally sexy wine.
96 Points, Antonio Galloni

The nose is replete here with dried red cherries, almonds, strawberries, glazed cranberries, some leafy nuances and already some tobacco and cigar box. Full-bodied and very layered with such concentration for this vintage. Firm yet sturdy tannins, no shortage of fine acidity and a long, structured finish. Such depth. Drink in 2020.
94 Points, James Suckling

Tight and focused, this red features a beam of cherry, strawberry, leather, tobacco, tar and iron wrapped in the grip of dense, refined tannins. Fresh and balanced, showing plenty of energy on the resonant finish. Best from 2023 through 2040.
94 Points, Wine Spectator

The Costa Russi has more raspberry fruit notes and floral touches, too, in comparison with the Barbaresco.  Warm, tangy, bright, edgy: a cascade of scent, a splash of flavour.  After this vivacious mid-palate, the wine fills satisfyingly towards the finish.
92 Points, Andrew Jefford, Decanter

Tasting Notes

Gaja’s Costa Russi is usually the most aromatic and elegant of the three single vineyard wines with a finer structure. The 2014 retains its personality with an expansive bouquet of wild berries mingled with rose petals and an attractive balsamic note. Succulent and rich on the palate, it has a core of sweet red fruits with darker mulberry and blackberry characters in the background which balance the lovely bright acidity and elegant tannins. On the finish, Mediterranean herbs and some delicate spices add further complexity.
The over-all impression is of a beautifully harmonious and captivating wine with magnificent depth and length. Whilst appealing now, it will mature well for twenty years or more.
