Decanter: Has the overriding freshness and finesse of the grand vin. Perhaps a touch 'fruitier' and round (70% Merlot) but clearly the same terroir and philosophy. Drink 2018-2035. 18 Additional Tasting

Tasting Notes

Sumptuous, silky and refined, this is a wonderful Chapelle with rich, seamless fruit and lifted fragrances. Fresh acidity and haunting fragrances make this a captivating wine. The tannins are masterfully handled and tasted on its own, you would be forgiven for confusing with the grand vin. 17.5 points 2019-2030+ 70M:30CF 17.5

ProducerChâteau Ausone

Château Ausone is perched on the hillside in the southern outskirts of the village of Saint Emilion, named after the Roman poet Ausonius. With 7.3 hectares of vines and its vineyards on a steep, south-east facing slope they flourish with the protection from cold north winds and westerly rain. The vines at the top of the slope thrive on limestone (the 'St Emilion plateau') whilst those further down benefit from a clay / loam topsoil (the 'Côtes'). Nowadays this has continued with the ubiquitous Michel Rolland as consultant,  now producing ultra-rich, exotically fruity wines that benefit from ageing.
