Tasting Notes

"Dark as night, the 2020 Isola dei Nuraghi Barrua smolders with a beguiling bouquet of sweet spice and pipe tobacco that gives way to plum sauce, grilled herbs and gravel dust. This is pure elegance. It's velvety in feel with ripe red and black fruit tones that smooth over the palate as tension builds. Hints of blood orange and dark chocolate amass toward the close. Notes of fresh coffee grinds mingle with stony mineral tones and fine-grained tannins as the 2020 tapers off long, potent and structured. While more approachable than the typical Barrua at this age, the 2020 still possesses exceptional balance and complexity. Give it another year or two to blossom."
94+ Points, Eric Guido, Vinous

"I am highly impressed with the new releases from Agricola Punica. These wines demonstrate the prestige of Carignano from Sardinia. The 2020 Barrua, 85% Carignano and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, comes across as distinctly Sardinian. It possesses extraordinary complexity and the ability to mature over the course of a decade or more. I followed the 2020 over the course of three days, and it continued to improve. For a more approachable style, look to the Montessu, a softer interpretation of Carignano balanced by a mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah."

ProducerAgricola Punica

Agricola Punica is based in the dramatic hills of southern Sardinia. The project was created as a collaboration between the Sardinian Santadi family; Dr Giacomo Tachis, the oenologist considered the architect of the Super-Tuscan movement; and the Marchese Incisa Della Rocchetta, winemaker of Sassicaia. In the words of Antonio Galloni: “how’s that for an all-star team?” The purple capsule and round logo of Barrua is a subtle nod to these illustrious origins, while the name Agricola Punica references the ancient Punic civilisation – whose ruins are found across Sardinia.
