Tasting Notes

"Transparent garnet verging on ruby. Very round and satisfying with true maritime Sangiovese character coming out. Gentle yet very obviously varietal. Tangy, dry finish with lovely, soft, appetising fruit on the way there. Long and really as luscious as Sangiovese gets."
17 Points, Jancis Robinson

"This is really crunchy and juicy, with plums, sliced peaches and some fresh basil and lemongrass. It’s full and layered with terra cotta notes and open-grained tannins. Takes off on the palate. Drink or hold."
95 Points, James Suckling

"The 2022 Poggio Valente is dense and quite powerful in the glass. Macerated cherry, plum, spice, leather, licorice and a kick of sweet oak are all amplified. I would cellar this for at least a year or two. There's plenty of depth here. Perhaps that will help all the elements to meld together a bit more fully. Time in the glass helps a lot, as Sangiovese notes become more pronounced as the wine opens. For now, Poggio Valente shows a lot of vintage 2022 ripeness, but I am cautiously optimistic about its prospects, given how well it develops with aeration."
92 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous

"Here is another knock-out bottle in this group of new releases from Fattoria le Pupille. The 2022 Poggio Valente is punchy and bright with terrific clarity of fruit. Winemaking has shifted over the years to prioritize larger oak botte. This change has allowed for more varietal expression with blue flower, heritage rose, tart cherry, rye bread and crushed stone. The wine's flavor signature is wholly Mediterranean with hints of rosemary and lavender. The effect is especially luminous and lifted in 2022. This is an elegant wine with a unique voice."
95+ Points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

ProducerFattoria Le Pupille

Elisabetta Geppetti, the founder of Fattoria Le Pupille, is a woman of extraordinary energy and vision. She was only 20 years old when she first took the reins of her family’s estate in Southern Tuscany in the 1980s. The winery is synonymous with Morellino di Scansano, and Elisabetta has been instrumental in putting this appellation on the map for wine lovers, producing excellent value Sangiovese and achieving global recognition with the region’s first Super Tuscan, Saffredi. Her children, Clara and Ettore, now run the winery, and this second generation has added two remarkable, innovative wines to the portfolio: Le Pupille, an amphora-aged Syrah, and Piemme, a unique Petit Manseng.
