Steenberg -LogoSteenberg Merlot won Double Gold at the annual Veritas Awards

Held in Cape Town in October, the Veritas Awards aim to celebrate the best of the best of South African wines. An accomplished judges list meant that Gold and Double Gold medals were scarce, with only 2.9% of entries recieving the latter. Steenberg Merlot 2011 however was one of only two Merlots in the entire competition that took this top accolade.

3 Armit Wines Exclusive Producers featured in James Suckling Top 100 Wines of 2014

Compelling aromas of chili pepper, nuts, beeswax and dark fruits with dried strawberries. Hints of black olives and meat. Full body with extremely thick, silky tannins and a long, flavorful finish. This is layered and so structured, with fabulous length and density. Savory. Chocolate powder at the end. This needs at least three or four years of bottle age. A triumph for the vintage. Pure merlot. 98 points

Complex aromas of blackberry and whole white truffles with hints of wet earth and stones. Full body and structured with gorgeous, velvety tannins, but reserved and polished. Very long finish with fabulous fruit. Goes on for minutes. This is all class: the red wine of the vintage. Better in 2019. 97 points.

What’s Hot in Hong Kong: Armit Wines!

We were delighted to see the Drinks Business' feature on Armit Wines HK.

"Speaking to the drinks business, managing director, Richard Sutton, said that old Rioja from Vega Sicilia and Rioja Alta “are becoming very popular".

“We’ve also seen the continued rise of Italy, particularly the Super Tuscans and I’m pleased to see a bit of volume with white wines too and not just white Burgundy."

British merchants back Italian fine wineMartin _213x 247

Our very own Head of Private Clients Martin Buchanan ws quoted in a feature by the Drinks Business on the growing popularity of Italian Wine.

“Martin Buchanan, head of private client sales at John Armit, has also noted a boost in Italy. “People are collecting Sassicaia, Ornellaia and Masseto in particular and they seem to go up 10% a year once they get going. Bordeaux’s been down for quite a long time and I think a lot of people have moved their investment over.”

Buchannan believes Italy’s biggest stars “are not really trying to make the market as such. They tend to go up £5 – 10 on release with prices increasing in line with demand. They could overplay it at some point, and Masseto is probably closest to doing that, but it’s genuinely low production which is why they get away with it.””

Walter speller, Purple Pages, 20th October 2014

Seductive, earthy marasca cherry with a hint of black tea and dark chocolate. The new oak is perfectly integrated but the bitter tannins are slightly drying on the finish, at least for the moment. (WS) 14.5%  Drink 2016-2030. 17 points.

Appealing, open-knit sweet cherry and raspberry. A little jammy and super perfumed on the nose but beautifully balanced by freshness and powdery tannins. Very intense and sweet finish. (WS). 14.5% . Drink 2014-2024. 17.5 points.

Deep, brooding and dark. Still very compact fruit and firmly tannic too, but it all comes beautifully together on the finish. (WS) . 14.5%. Drink 2018-2036. 18 points

Medicinal and stubborn nose but finely perfumed underneath. The oak is a little evident at this stage but melts completely into the ripe fruit on the finish. Ripe grainy tannins and elegant palate weight. Very long. (WS), 13.5%. Drink 2016-2028. 17.5 points.

Domaine Huet Vouvray in Jancis Robinson's Purple Pages

Jancis Robinson's article on "Vouvrays back to the 1930s" demonstrates the terrific ageing potential of these remarkable chenin blancs.

  • Huet, Clos du Bourg Moelleux 1988 Vouvray

Dark tawny gold. Very intense and almonds on the nose, much drier and tarter. Really not that like a Moelleux. Very clean. Wait? Great density and nervosity. Well sculpted, very long. Drink 2018-2035 17.5. points
