Armit Tasting Note

Grown almost exclusively in Puglia, the Negroamaro grape reaches its apogee in the Salice Salentino appellation. This wine is a classic example of rich, dark berries leading into an earthy, herbal aroma. The palate is dense and tightly packed with firm tannins and crunchy acidity. The blackberry and plum provide a warm, spicy quality which would be a great match for grilled meats, rich pasta dishes and game.

Producer

For three generations, the Cantele family have been making wines in the Salento peninsula of Puglia. Having originally come from northern Italy, Giovanni Battista and his wife Teresa Manara decided to move to Salento and establish a winery in the late 1950s.

Now the whole family is involved and their energy and enthusiasm for what they do is contagious. Planted with 30 hectares of vines, with the primary focus on local and historical varieties such as Primitivo, Negroamaro and Fiano and later successes with international varieties, the area provides ideal growing conditions. Long, sunny days and cooling sea breezes sweeping in from the Adriatic and Ionian seas have led to the production of wines which are rich, ripe and beautifully balanced.

Region

Puglia is “the heel” of the boot of peninsular Italy. It is bordered by both the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, giving it one of the longest coastlines of any region in Italy. The flagship red grape of Puglia is Primitivo, a distant cousin of California’s Zinfandel grape. The wines made with Primitivo are luscious, heavy and definitely “food wines”. Another successful and important red wine from Puglia is Salice Salentino, a powerful red wine made primarily with Negroamaro. We are very proud to work with Cantele and Masseria Li Veli, both family-run estates in the heart of Puglia, whose elegant wines offer exceptional value for money.
