Domaine Simon Bize occupies a large part in our hearts at Armit Wines. Under the stewardship of Patrick Bize, the Domaine became the reference point for Savigny-lès-Beaune. Patrick was an obsessive perfectionist and his meticulous care and attention translated to crystal pure wines which offer tremendous value to Burgundy lovers. Patrick’s tragic passing two years ago is still deeply felt but it was a tremendous delight to see the winery in great shape during this year’s visit.
Under the leadership of Chisa, Patrick’s wife, the Domaine has made joyful wines in 2014. They are full of character and poise with an understated elegance; wines which are clear-cut in flavour and speak of place. You cannot love Burgundy and not enjoy these wines. After an exultant tasting of the new vintage, Chisa opened a bottle of 2007 Savigny lès- Beaune Blanc 1er Cru Aux Vergelleses to share with us. It quickly became a nod and toast to one of Patrick’s triumphant efforts. The wine was effortlessly youthful with vibrant aromatics and cascaded layers of depth and complexity. A gorgeous way to cap off a full day of tasting.
This historic estate is in very good hands. Their tremendous effort in 2014 matched with a better hand dealt by Mother Nature is more than enough to put a smile back on the faces of both the Domaine’s fans and the great people who work there. Long live the wines of Domaine Simon Bize.
