We have visited pretty widely from superstars to artisans and one producer who has really stood out is Taupenot-Merme. Romain Taupenot continues to make great strides, with quality, which has been high for many years, now scaling new heights. Romain is always a wonderful host full of insight and we had an illuminating conversation about his winemaking style and how he learnt a lot from Henri Jayer.
The wines are powerful and concentrated yet pretty and not overworked. Much like the man himself, they are confident but not arrogant. Taupenot-Merme’s style has been consistent for many years and Romain is certainly not one to change with the fashion, but right now his wines are exactly what everybody seems to be looking for: pure, crystalline, red-fruited Burgundies which are transparent and vineyard specific.
Romain digs deep with a vintage comparison to 2014, going all the way back to 1978. A vintage he says we did not overhype at the time but became a superstar. He sees parallels; quite rich, opulent, full bodied, complex and with good nervosity.
