PRODUCER

DOMAINE ANDRÉ BRUNEL

The Brunel family has lived in the Southern Rhône since the 18th century. Andre Brunel's grandfather established the family winemaking tradition, and Andre himself took over the reins of running the Cailloux estate from his father in 1971. Under Andre's expert direction, Les Cailloux is now widely recognised as a world-class domaine. The vineyard holdings today span 80 hectares throughout the southern Rhône valley.

TASTING NOTES

Imagining the sweetness and purity of diverse berry fruits found in the corresponding “L’Esquerda” bottling allied to the saline savor of the corresponding “Vignes de Bila-Haut” will give you an idea of what awaits from the glass of 2011 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Latour de France Occultum Lapidem …there is, unsurprisingly, at least as much sheer complexity on display here...

Aromas of raspberry with a touch of violet and some black olive and rosemary notes fill the nose. The mouth is elegant and very well structured and balanced.

This cuvée¿s primary source is a very steep, terraced vineyard in the Côte Brune above Ampuis. The soil here is notably more limestone schistous, whereas the old-vine source in the Côte Blonde, more acidic and sandy, provides wine of less dense colour. Pure Syrah (Michel adds no Viognier) grown at minuscule yields from 70 year old vines gives this wine power...

TASTING NOTES

Inky black in colour. Concentrated on the nose, with notes of red and black berry fruit, molasses and cigar box. Wonderfully layered on the palate with incredible concentration of black fruit, some chocolate and herby notes. Dense, juicy and good chewy tannins lead to a lingering taste of blackberries. Delicious.

Domaine André Brunel Wines

All of the grapes are destemmed to avoid imparting bitterness, and since 1988, the wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. André Brunel is most famous for his premium, highly sought-after Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Cailloux, named after the famous Rhône pudding stones, and also his much-lauded Cuvée Centenaire, produced in tiny quantities in the best years from vines of over 100 years in age.

Brunel also produces outstanding value Côtes du Rhônes and a Vin de Pays Grenache that offers outstanding value for money. André Brunel is now deservedly recognised as one of the world's finest producers of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
