TASTING NOTES
A red with plum and cherry character, as well as hints of terracotta and rust. It’s medium-bodied with firm, tangy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. This is always a good, go-to red. Drink now.92 points, James Suckling
moreElisabetta Geppetti, the powerhouse behind Fattoria Le Pupille, is a woman of exceptional energy and vision. She was only 20 years old when she first took the reins at her family’s property in Scansano. The original wine made here was Morellino di Scansano which, to this day, remains the mainstay of production. With her steadfast vision, Elisabetta enlarged the estate to the current 75 hectares and added to the range Maremma’s first Super Tuscan, the Cabernet-based Saffredi. Thanks to Elisabetta’s incredible work over the last thirty years, Maremma is now firmly on the map of wine lovers.

This is the wine that began it all for Le Pupille and as an example of what Sangiovese can do in this part of the Maremma, look no further. This wine shows class and composure, combining both sweet fruit and savoury elements with background spice and pepper. Tannins are supporting yet succulent and in the glass it just gets better...

the Fattoria le Pupille 2018 Poggio Valente is an elegant expression of Sangiovese with just a hint of the freewheeling wildness that characterizes the Maremma region of southern Tuscany. The wine delivers cherry, wild rose, forest fruit and blueberry. Beyond those primary tones are integrated notes of spice and mild tobacco. The wine is put together with careful precision, and...

Wow, there is a very impressive freshness here that defies the heat of this vintage. The 2017 Saffredi does not seem like a 2017 at all. Now celebrating its 30th birthday, Saffredi is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. Thanks to the vineyard's proximity to the sea, leaving leaves on the vines and the sharp diurnal shifts...

The 2015 Morellino di Scansano Riserva represents a selection of the best fruit from this estate's 50 hectares of Sangiovese vineyards, plus 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. It shows firm structure, with dark fruit and black plum instead of the red fruit you get from the base Morellino. You also get nice earthy tones of moist potting soils and forest floor. [...]...

The 2018 Saffredi is a regal, elegant, supremely polished wine. It may very well be the most refined Saffredi I have ever tasted. Silky in its first impression, with striking aromatic presence and exceptional balance, the 2018 is a total knock-out. Sweet red cherry, plum, mocha, licorice and cinnamon accents develop over time, but it is the wine’s overall balance...

The 2016 Syrah is a dense, potent wine. Wild cherry, game, dried herbs, menthol, licorice and coffee are front and center. This is an especially rich style. Then, again we are in Maremma. The 2016 is a bit wild, but in the best sense of the term. It will offer its finest drinking alongside similarly hearty cuisine.95 points, Antonio Galloni,...
