Roagna's Barolo and Barbaresco "Off the Charts" - Antonio Galloni

“One of the highlights of my summer visit to Piedmont. Stated simply, Roagna's 2012 Barolos and Barbarescos are off the charts…[they] remain super-classic in style.”

Antonio Galloni

Luca Roagna is an outstanding, passionate and highly innovative winemaker who makes classic, age-worthy wines from some of the finest vineyards in Barbaresco and Barolo. Antonio Galloni recognises Luca as one of Piedmont’s leading producers, his recent scores confirm this with all of the 2012 releases scoring 95 Points or higher.

Whilst Roagna’s style is traditional, Luca is always keen to experiment but emphasises that the character of his wines comes from the vineyards and old vines. He actively promotes biodiversity to express the most delicate nuances of each plot and uses massale selection to create new plants from old vines. Grasses and flowers are encouraged to grow between the rows to create a natural cover crop and a sanctuary for wildlife.

The harvest takes place when the grapes reach perfect levels of maturity which is judged by tasting the berries. In the cellar, wild yeasts and judicious ageing in large old casks allows the wines to achieve their fullest expression resulting in wonderfully elegant and subtle wines with lovely freshness and beautifully integrated tannins.

A relatively small vintage, up to 30% less than last year, the 2012s are bursting with character and have great definition which will give them plenty of ageing potential, wines Luca describes as having “intense flavours with just the right amount of alcohol” which gives them a classic character.

The latest release include Montemarzino 2015, a beautifully refreshing and mineral white released for the first time last year, as well as the rare flagship Crichet Pajé 2008.

Roagna’s wines are reaching new levels of depth and complexity with each new vintage and following Galloni's excellent scores we anticipate strong demand for the 2012s. Solea 2015 - £245 Per 6 Bottles In Bond

Solea comes from the Pira Vineyard located in Castiglione Falletto.  Fermented in large casks and aged in neutral barrels for about two years this is fantastically refreshing with notes of lemon zest and lime and an elegant spicy note.  The unusual blend of Chardonnay with a small percentage of Nebbiolo gives it a unique character.

Montemarzino 2015 - £245 Per 6 Bottles In Bond

Sourced from a small vineyard in the town of Montemarzino in the Colli Tortonesi area, this is a beautifully mineral and refreshing wine.  Hand-harvested and fermented with natural yeasts in large oak casks and aged for two more years in casks, it bursts with aromas of wild flowers and lemons with bright citrus characters on the palate.

Barbaresco Pajé 2012 - £325 Per 6 Bottles In Bond

Roagna's 2012 Barbaresco Pajé opens with striking aromatics. Spice, leather, sweet tobacco, hard candy and dried cherry notes lift from the glass, but it is the purity and sweetness of the fruit that really stands out. The decision to shorten the amount of time the wines spent in barrel is evident in the wine's freshness. Polished tannins give the 2012 tons of near and medium term appeal. What a gorgeous wine this is. Drink 2020-2032
95 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barbaresco Pajé Vecchie Viti 2012 - £660 Per 6 Bottles In Bond

The 2012 Barbaresco Pajé Vecchie Viti is wonderfully complete. Dark, ample and full-bodied, yet also very much in the classic mold of all these wines, the 2012 has so much to say. Herb, tobacco, licorice, menthol and earthiness fill out the wines broad, muscular frame. I would prefer to cellar the 2012 for at least a handful of years.  Drink 2022-2037

Barbaresco Asili Vecchie Viti 2012 - £660 Per 6 Bottles In Bond

The 2012 Barbaresco Asili Vecchie Viti is silky, gracious and lifted, as wines from this site in Barbaresco typically are. Fresh, nuanced. Hard candy, orange peel, red-toned fruit, mint, chalk and white pepper contribute to the wine's bright flavor profile. The tannins are finely-knit into the wine's fabric, which makes the 2012 easy to drink and enjoy, even on the young side. This is another impressive showing from Luca Roagna. Drink 2020-2032
96 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barbaresco Montefico Vecchie Viti 2012 - £660 Per 6 Bottles In Bond

A wine of classic elegance, poise and energy. Scents of orange peel, star anise, spice and rosewater give the Montefico a decidedly exotic feel. The firm Montefico tannins are present, but the 2012 is a Barbaresco that favors finesse over power. As always, the Montefico has a very distinctive tannic grip as one of its key signatures. Today, the Montefico is perfumed, ethereal and exquisitely beautiful.  Drink 2022-2037

Barolo La Pira 2012 - £325 Per 6 Bottles In Bond

The 2012 Barolo Pira is deep, dense and voluptuous, especially for the vintage. There is plenty of Roagna structure, but the tannins are nearly buried by the sheer density of the fruit. Sweet herbs, tobacco, underbrush, menthol and licorice give the Pira a wild, unrestrained side that I personally find hugely appealing. If there is one wine readers should not miss in this set of new releases, the 2012 Pira is it. What a wine! Drink 2022-2042

Barolo La Pira Vecchie Viti 2012 - £660 Per 6 Bottles In Bond

The proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove, 2012 Barolo Pira Vecchie Viti, has it all. At times sensual and weightless, while in other moments much more powerful, the 2012 constantly changes in the glass, in the way only top flight Nebbiolo can. The 2012 is dense and layered, with striking translucency that plays off the more overt elements. Structured and yet also light on its feet, the 2012 is superb today. The persistent, classically austere finish will thrill readers who enjoy traditionally made Barolos. I find the differences between Roagna's two 2012 Barolos to be more stylistic rather than qualitative. The Barolo Pira will drink beautifully with minimal cellaring, while the Vecchie Viti is a wine for the cellar. Drink 2022-2042
96+ Points, Antonio Galloni

Barbaresco Crichet Pajé 2008 - £1,500 Per 3 Bottles In Bond

The 2008 Barbaresco Crichët Pajé is a gorgeous, translucent wine that shows this cool, late-ripening vintage at its best. Sweet red cherry, mint, kirsch, hard candy and white pepper are all beautifully delineated. In many vintages, Crichët Pajé was massively tannic and forbidding. The 2008 is the most refined vintage of this wine I have ever tasted. Put simply, the 2008 is sublime. Even so, my impression, and hope, is that subsequent vintages will be even better. Drink 2018-2038
