Tasting Notes

This has amazing aromatics: sweet blackberry and black cherry fruit with dried herbs, tar and spice, as well as some hints of vanilla and coconut, and sweet tobacco, too. The palate is juicy and supple, but also quite profound, showing cherries, berries, spice, sweet herbs, some cedar and coconut from the oak, and a lovely sense of harmony and precision. It’s a ripe wine, but shows such complexity and focus, with everything pulling in the right direction. I’m just so impressed with this wine: in its style – classical Rioja – it is just about perfect, and is beginning to enter a very long drinking window. So complex and layered and refined.

Reviews & Scores

Old-fashioned Rioja at its glorious best”
Tim Atkins MW, Wine of the Week

“One of the most outrageously enjoyable wines I’ve had in months […] Make no mistake, a claret or burgundy of this quality and this maturity would be at least twice the price.”
Johnny Ray, The Spectator

This wine is one of the most rewarding and classically-shaped wines I have tasted from this property in a long while and the fact that bottles only cost £35 makes this release an even more compelling proposition. […  ]It is the epitome of historic Rioja”
Matthew Jukes, Wednesday Wine

The blend consists of 95% Tempranillo from 40-year-old vines in Las Cuevas, El Palo and Las Monjas in Rodezno, complemented with 5% Graciano from the Montecillo estate in Fuenmayor. The Graciano gives the wine an aromatic intensity and acidity, to carry the structure and elegance of the Tempranillo. The grapes are vinified separately in four-and-a-half-year-old American oak for three years, and...

Spice-tinged red fruit and floral aromas pick up hints of coconut and succulent herbs with air. Silky and expressive on the palate, offering appealingly sweet cherry and raspberry flavors and a spicecake nuance that builds steadily in the glass. Closes long and smooth, with repeating florality and subtle tannins that come in late.92 points, Josh Raynolds, Vinous

This is a classic marriage (for 904) of Tempranillo and 11% Graciano that will appeal to the wine's many dedicated fans. Sweet balsamic and coconut aromas segue into a palate that's gentle, savoury and caressing with vital underlying acidity and structure.95 points and one of the ‘Wines of the Year’, Tim Atkin MW
