La Rioja Alta SA Gran Reserva 904 2004 is Jane MacQuitty's "Keeper" of the week "My idea of a great gran reserva rioja, from La Rioja Alta’s best barrels of their own 40-year-old, principally tempranillo vines but, according to them, with a vital, velvety, 10 per cent dollop of graciano. From a great vintage and aged for much longer than most gran reservas: four years in American oak, and five-plus in bottle. The result is textbook, sweetly scented, savoury, tender red rioja with all the complex, seductive sandalwood, cinnamon, tobacco and spice-box scents and flavours you could ask for. Enjoy this sublime, silky rioja now with roast duck, or lamb, or tuck it away until 2019 for the fruit to fade and more tea-leaf, leather and spice to emerge." The Times, 27th September 2014

"We hit Urla Domain where passionate owner Can Ortaba? produces nine astounding wines. The wine critic, Jancis Robinson, rated the result highly last year, and his cuvées are knocking the socks of French vintages in blind tastings." The Times, Travel, 6th September 2014

In the Press - September 2014 Seresin Rachel Pinot Noir 2011 is Jane MacQuitty's 'Keeper' of the week in the Saturday Times Finicky film-maker turned winemaker Michael Seresin claims to be “just the handprint on the label and the bank”, but his six sublime pinot noirs, from different plots but all organic, biodynamic, hand-picked, wild-yeast fermented and unfined, reject the claim. Clearly Seresin has burgundy and its quality hierarchy in his sights with the low-yielding Rachel, named after his mother. A blend of their three vineyards’ best fruit and aged partly in new French oak for more than a year, it is as close to a good value, village-level burgundy as you’ll get in the New World. I adored its rich, smoky, polished, textured, plum and game fruit, with that typical savoury, umami-lick on the finish that is the Seresin signature. Great now, but even finer in four years’ time. Tahbilk's Marsanne in the Drinks Business Top 10 Australian Wines Nominated by: Clement Robert, Medlar. Why inspiring? One of my favourite estates and a member of the 12 first families of wine. This Marsanne is showing huge complexity with some ripe citrus characters, an impressive minerality and some yellow peach notes. The high level of richness on the palate is well balanced by a superb freshness. This wine, despite showing a bit of evolution, will keep improving with age. The Drinks Business, 18th September
