One of the most famous Hospices holdings, the vines lie in the upper section of Mazis Chambertin, exactly level with the neighbouring Chambertin Clos de Bèze and the oldest vines (66% of the plot) date back to 1947. On the nose, the approachability of 2009 is immediately apparent with gorgeous bramble fruit in abundance. Spices lurk beneath, supporting the fruit and adding intrigue and complexity. On the palate, the ripeness of the vintage is clear, with great depth of fruit, a creamy underlay and a fluid but fresh style. Rich, intense and seductive, this has finely detailed tannins and terrific precision. A prodigious finish completes an impressive display. This will make for a great bottle in 10 years time.
