TUSCANY

Tuscany, along with Piedmont, is the foundation upon which Italy’s wine reputation has been built. In total, there are 29 wines with DOC status produced in the region. It is also home to 7 of Italy’s DOCG areas, and many premium non-classified wines.

Chianti accounts for a large part of the region with the most prestigious DOCG Chianti Classico wines coming from the beautiful central hills, which provide a tempering effect on the summertime heat, many vineyards are planted on the highest slopes. The principal grape variety is Sangiovese, alongside other indigenous and international varietals.

TASTING NOTES

Again lovely deep colour. This has touches of licquorice on the nose, as well as hallmark assam tea and roasted herbs. On the palate incredibly mineral, with black fruit emphasis and notes of cocoa - even dark chocolate. Really silky, with finely grained ripe tannic structure and vital acidity. There is greater intensity here than with Rennina, a bit more...

The impressive 2011 vintage has a magnificent, complex bouquet with a myriad of vibrant red cherry and dark strawberry fruit characters with darker plum and rich cassis aromas in the background, mingled with exotic notes of smoke and spice. TASTING NOTES

Redigaffi is the undisputed signature wine of Tua Rita, hailing from a small plot of meticulously selected Merlot which was first planted in 1994 and is aged in small oak barrels for 18 months. The 2012 is a truly remarkable wine that is redolent with vibrant perfumed aromas – at once hedonistic and elegant. A profound texture, there is spice...

TASTING NOTES

In Redigaffi’s twentieth vintage, there is no doubting the pedigree of this wonderful Super Tuscan. This brilliant release from Tua Rita is, quite simply, an embarrassment of superlatives. Just 8000 bottles (compared to the usual 10 000) were made of this velveteen wine. As such, demand is expected to be even higher than usual. A wine of remarkable presence; this...

TASTING NOTES

Undoubtedly the star of the show for me, this wine bears all the hallmarks of beautiful, intense Tuscan Cabernet. Showy and rounded with a wild, spicy and concentrated texture. There are hints of smoke and tar beneath the dense, sweet core of fruit and exotic spice. The finish is long, rich and impressive. Wonderfully youthful in its freshness – quite...

TASTING NOTES

The cool start to the vintage followed by high temperatures have created a wonderfully complex structure, with generous, ripe fruit, overlaid with a beguiling aromatic complexity. Pure, rich fruit character, complemented by chocolate and balsamic notes, with herbs and zest lift out of the glass. The extra few percent of Cabernet Franc provide a perfect framework of elegance and minerality...

this area is huge with industrial cooperatives alongside tiny family farms and as such quality can vary substantially. To the south near the town of Siena is Montalcino, where again Sangiovese is key, though here it is a local strain, Brunello, or more officially Sangiovese Grosso, that produces Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino.

Historically Brunello needed considerable ageing, and the minimum age before release is still 4 years. However Brunello is now being produced that is delicious from release as well as having good potential for ageing – the best of both worlds and an essential development in the face of changing modern tastes.

Coastal Tuscany, particularly the area around the beautiful village of Bolgheri really hit the map in the 1970s as a new class of wines known as “Super Tuscans” emerged. These wines were made outside DOC/DOCG regulations, using international varieties, some were considered to be of outstanding quality and received high scores from the critics and commanded surprisingly high prices for the time.

The two most renowned Super Tuscans to this day are Sassicaia and Ornellaia, for which Armit are the exclusive UK agents! Bolgheri today is synonymous with winemaking of the highest order. Exceptional terroir along the coast complemented by the wonderful Mediterranean climate provide perfect conditions for vines not only in Bolgheri and the Maremma but down to Suvereto and beyond.
